What Is a Retention Election?
In Pennsylvania, judges are elected to 10-year terms. After that, they face a retention vote — a simple yes-or-no vote on whether to keep them on the bench.
In 2015, Democrats flipped the Pennsylvania Supreme Court by winning all three open seats. Those three Justices are now up for retention.
If voters side with MAGA extremists and conservative megadonors, Democrats will lose the majority on the state’s highest court. And with Republicans controlling the state Senate, Governor Josh Shapiro likely won’t be able to replace them.
For right-wing billionaires, the message is simple: Vote NO.
We must fight back.
These three Justices have served with integrity, upholding voting rights, reproductive freedom, and the rule of law — and extremists will use those decisions to attack them.
Defend Our Courts has a plan to fight back, defend the bench, and protect democracy.
